Ellis Island References to Wizna

Method 1: Results of searching for "Town Name: Sounds Like Wizna" and "Ethnicity: Hebrew"

-- Many ship manifests did not identify persons as ethnic "Hebrew" and therefore some Jews who did indeed emigrate from Wizna will not show up in this list, since it is a list of only those classified exactly as such. Many records at Ellis Island did not classify Jews in the manifests under "Hebrew" for various reasons, the most common of which was that the ship did not make such a distinction at all. Others were listed as "Heb" or "Hebr" and these would not be caught using this search method either. Methods 2 and 3 below found those other Wizna Jews.
-- The results using Method 1 include other towns that sound like Wizna, but which are distinctly different towns. While I could clearly eliminate most of these "wrong" towns, I chose not to do so because I might eliminate a correct one in the process. Instead, I have highlighted in bold those that are surely referring to Wizna, based on my knowledge of Wizna surnames and by checking most of the original manifests. A few of the ones not highlighted just might refer to Wizna too.
-- In many other records, Wizna is spelled in all sorts of strange ways that would never be captured by a search engine searching for "Town Name: Sounds Like Wizna" under either Methods 1 or 2. Upon checking many of these original manifests, it is clear that the town name, as stated therein, was indeed Wizna. In these types of cases, one also needs to search for an individual surname. These records were found using Method 3. This list will only grow as more surnames are researched or more family members let me know of their finds.
-- Some records do not list any town at all, or instead, list only a country, for example, "Russia." Some persons lived in other towns for a few months or years in transition to America, and their entries would typically state that town as their place of residence. According to statistics, "London" is the most common such town. Wizna records which fall under this category would not show up using any of the previous method. In these cases, one needs to search for an individual surname. See Method 4.
